Portraiture in the past has been regarded as a documentation of a person but for me it is a documentation of the encounter between myself and the subject. It is not meant to reveal them, nor is it meant to subject them to an X-ray; it is a departure from that. I am more interested in the alchemical reaction that occurs when elements are brought together in a space.

Not so much a collaboration between photographer and subject, more a scientific experiment – the studio becomes a lab. For me the portrait is not psychological either. It is atomic. Atoms change their electrical charge continuously, and the more challenging the shoot, the greater the chance of this charge. Yes, I do begin with an idea, a series of ideas that link together logically. But logic is often superseded by events beyond my control.

Mario Sorrenti is certainly of the most important fashion photographer working today. He dated Kate Moss back in the beginning of the 90′s when he shot the famous Calvin Klein’s Obsession campaign and let me tell you something he is still quite at the top of his game today. He is known mostly for his very erotic, often nude imagery mostly for major publication such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and I respect a lot his efforts to always push forward his creativity even after years in the industry.

I don’t think Annie Leibovitz really needs an introduction but just so you know, she was the chief photographer for the Rolling Stone magazine in the 70′s. During that time she shot 142 covers including the one of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. That particular photograph was the last one of Lennon, he was killed five hours later. In 1983 she started working for Vanity Fair and in 1998 for Vogue. She is also the woman behind a lot of major ad campaigns working for clients like the Gap, Louis Vuitton, Disney Land, Got Milk, American Express and so on. She had numerous shows in important art institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum and she released seven officials books. She also had an love affair with Susan Sontag, the writer of the famous On Photography essay. Last year Annie Leibovitz received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the notorious Infinity Awards.

Here is a great documentary about her life and works. It’s really funny to have insights from the celebrities and it’s very interesting to have the chance to see what it looks like behind the scenes of her photo shoots.
