Ingres, (29 August 1780 – 14 January 1867), was a French painter. He is in my book of the greatest portraitist and he is recognized as being an major influence and precursor of modern art even if he considered himself as an orthodox who followed painting classicism. Picasso and Matisse were great admirer of the neoclassicist and often cite him as a source of inspiration.
